What does Footman do?

Footman watches folders on your Mac, like Downloads, Desktop or iCloud Drive, and files what lands in them automatically. Rules you set once sort, rename, tag and unpack files, and every rule reads like a plain sentence.

What is Bertie?

Bertie is Footman's built-in AI filing assistant. Describe a rule in plain English and he sets it up, ask where a file went and he'll show you, or let him sort and rename files by what's inside them.

Does Bertie send my files anywhere?

Not by default. Bertie runs on your Mac with Apple Intelligence, so your questions and files never leave it. Claude is optional and stays off unless you add your own API key in Settings → Bertie → Advanced. If you do, Bertie's requests go to Anthropic using your key, including file names, matching activity and, for rules that sort or rename by content, text from the file.

Which Macs does Footman support?

Footman runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Bertie needs macOS 26 on a Mac with Apple Intelligence, or your own Claude API key.

Can I undo what Footman does?

Yes, for moves, renames and anything sent to the Trash. Each one is logged, and you can put a file back or undo a whole clean-up in one click. Tags, copies, unpacked archives, Shortcuts and scripts can't be undone. You can preview what a rule will do before it runs.

Does it work with iCloud Drive?

Yes. Footman watches iCloud Drive and other cloud folders, and skips files that are only stored online so it never triggers a download.
